KNIT IN

The 14th March saw nearly 30 ladies nattering whilst knitting strips for the North Devon Hospice. Thanks to them, another successful afternoon raised £166. Lizzie, from the Hospice Fund Raising team, joined in soing a grand job helping with the tea making and washing up.

Don't forget, the Craft group meets every Monday afternoon from 2.00 p.m. in the Manor Hall. All knitters [and other crafts] and natterers are very welcome. Just £2.00 a session including refresshments. Come and join us!

The Craft Group, affectionately known as Stitch and Bitch [but we can assure you there is no bitching even if we do put the world to right!], meets every Monday afternoon in the Manor Hall from 1.45 p.m. and everyone is welcome. Just come along and bring whatever craft you are currently working on - needlework, knitting, embroidery, beading, painting, etc. - chat amongst friends and enjoy tea or coffee and biscuits - and all for just £2 a session!

The Art section of the Craft Group meets on the 1st and 3rd Tuesdays in the month, again at the Manor Hall but in the morning, from 9.30 a.m. On the 3rd Tuesday, Christine Grafton comes to support the group, either with a technique lesson or to help with individual work.

New artists, beginners and those with little or lots of experience are most welcome. Come along to find out more.

During the week-end of 24th/25th September, the Hospice are organising four Devon Walks as a fund raising event, all varying in length and required fitness levels!

Taking it easy on Saturday, 24th at 11.00 a.m. you can walk round the lake and grounds at Arlington Court. This is a gentle, 2-mile walk. For the more ambitious there is a 7-mile walk in the evening, from 4.00 p.m., on Saunton Sands Beach. An intermediate walk followed by a BBQ whilst watching the sunset.

On Sunday, 25th, you can take a breath-taking 14-mile circular walk from Brendon Two Gates, starting out at 9.30 a.m. A challenging walk with plenty of inclines! Or, you could do the coastal walk from Clovelly to Hartland Quay. A tough, but beautiful 10-miler which starts at 10.00 a.m.

NORTH DEVON HOSPICE

We shall be holding three events during June and July, raising money to support families throughout North Devon who are faced with the impact of a life threatening illness. The Hospice helps individuals retain their independence and enable them to make informed choices about their treatment. We might not be able to put days into their life, but we can certainly put life into their days, and so do our best to improve quality of life.

Every day we help over 100 local people; be it patients, their carers or their families and children. All our care and support is provided free of charge, however, it cost £3.2 million per year to provide these specialist services, and that's why the money raised from these events is so important.

  [both evenings the same] Fulham Restaurant, Barnstaple, 6.30 p.m. Tables of 2-10 people welcome. 4-course set menu whilst listening to gentle jazz sounds of Fong Liu, a professional Chinese singer, story teller and voice over artist. Tickets £25 per person. Booking essential.
• UK Sandcastle Competition, Sunday 3rd July, 11.00 a.m. to 4.00 p.m.
  Woolacombe Beach. Teams of 6 will be digging and battling it out to build the best sandcastle. To enter a team ring Rebecca or just go along to enjoy the carnival atmosphere, samba band and watch the builders at work.

OPEN GARDENS AT THE NORTH DEVON HOSPICE
Saturday and Sunday, 4th and 5th September, 11.00 a.m. to 4.30 p.m.

In 2009, our 25th anniversary year, we were delighted to open our gardens to the public for the first time under the National Garden Scheme. With our 5 acres of beautiful grounds, and being the first hospice in the country to do this, there was considerable interest from the community and we welcomed over 500 people over two week-ends.

This year we have a new addition in the shape of our Physic Garden. The ornamental garden is unique in the country as it is dedicated to plants and herbs that have medicinal values. As well as this, we have a Mazzard cherry orchard, a kitchen garden, two ponds, a rose garden, beautiful lawns, winter borders and a Retreat Garden for quiet contemplation.

Cream teas and other refreshments will be available at our Terrace Cafe which overlooks our gardens, and there will be a plant sale and the chance to share tips with our Kew-trained gardener, Colin Porter.

Entry is just £3.00 and we hope that many visitors from Berrynarbor will come and join us at some time during the week-end. We look forward to seeing you!

BIKEY'S BASH FOR NORTH DEVON HOSPICE

A very big thank you to everyone who was involved in any way, those who were able to come and those who generously donated. That, and the beautiful weather, all made for a fantastic event. I was able to report at that time that £613 had been raised, but further donations have brought it to over £700!

Thank you to Alan and Issy who work so hard in the planning and on the day. All the other willing helpers, Sharon, Chris, Marion, Margaret and friends and neighbours who live on Berrynarbor Park who help so much in setting up. It all makes for a great tribute to Brian [Bikey].

THE NORTH DEVON HOSPICE

Waking up to a white and wintry morning, one wondered if the Knit In Coffee Morning for the North Devon Hospice would go ahead. But as normal in Berrynarbor, knitters and supporters braved the elements and turned out! Twenty-one knitters nattered whilst producing amazing technicoloured strips and enjoying unlimited gorgeous cakes and coffee, also enjoyed by those who came just for a natter.

Thank you to everyone who supported this event in any way - knitters, cake makers, raffle prize donators, helpers and visitors. Your generosity meant that £255 and a bagful of multi-coloured strips were taken to the Hospice in the afternoon.

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED TO HELP WITH COLLECTIONS FOR THE NORTH DEVON HOSPICE

THE NORTH DEVON HOSPICE

We are holding three fund raising events during February and March. The North Devon Knit In is one of our most popular events raising huge amounts of money. Clicking needles can be heard all around North Devon towards the end of February. The blankets made up from the strips knitted are shared between the Dog's Trust, Age Concern and the David Rundle Rwanda Trust. [See the Craft Group article for Berrynarbor's Knit In].

Following the huge success of last year's Big Breakfast , organisations and businesses will be holding another Big Breakfast across North Devon between the 26th and 28th March. Local cafes, restaurants, canteens and pubs will be asking you to eat breakfast out for the day or donate at breakfast time to a collection bucket - all profits going to the Hospice. Watch out for a breakfast near you! Locations will be publicised in the Journal nearer the time.

Well fed on breakfasts, Sunday 28th March will be the time to 'walk them off'. Walk for Life brings people together aged from 5 to 105 to stroll some of our most scenic local routes. There are 8 walks to choose from, ranging from 3 miles to 10. Entry fee is £5 for adults and £2.50 for children and walkers are asked to raise money from sponsorship to go to the Hospice.

Cancer affects many of us during our lifetime, whether it be a member of our family, a friend or indeed ourselves, and that is why it is so comforting to know there are establishments like the North Devon Hospice which can help to make a different to the lives of those living with this life threatening illness.

It is for this reason that I am organising a Charity Ball on the 28th November, and I do hope that you will give your support to this very worthwhile cause.

CREAM TEA IN AID OFNORTH DEVON HOSPICE

Well, the weather will not stop the brave souls of North Devon! It was another very damp Saturday afternoon on 15th August when a good number of people gathered to enjoy a cream tea held in Brian's memory.

There was a crush inside, but some hardy folk sat out under umbrellas and a good time was had by all. The good news is that with many kind donations as well as attendees and a final generous sum, I was able to send a cheque for £600 to the Hospice. Thank you so much to all who took part in any way at all.

My special thanks to Alan and Izzy, Sharon and Chris, who worked so hard in the kitchen. A number of requests have been made to make it an annual event, so, as they say, watch this space!

THE NORTH DEVON HOSPICE

The North Devon Hospice are organising a fantastic event and are looking for volunteers. Castle Hill, by kind permission of Lord and Lady Arran, will be hosting, for the first time in nearly 100 years, the English National Sheep Dog Trials and to complement this they are organising a Devon Country Fayre with loads of lovely local produce and crafts. It is a 3-day event and runs from 21st to 23rd August. Volunteers will be needed for a wide variety of tasks and will be well looked after! The North Devon Hospice will again be holding Light up a Life Services this Christmas. This is an opportunity to remember loved ones at this special time of year by lighting a candle in their memory at one of their uplifting services:

There are no Hospice fund raising events in August, but some good challenges in September.

Bideford Charity Fun Run is on Sunday, 7th September. Starting in Bideford, this challenging 10 mile sponsored run [organised by Bideford Amateur Athletics Club] will take the runners through Instow and Yelland before finishing at Bideford Quay. Following last year's very successful run, it would be great to see new and old faces alike.

The 4th annual On Target event on the 7th September is one for the boys! Teams of 4 will work their way through a series of activities at Keypitts that includes quad biking, clay pigeon shooting, archery, and this year's event promises to be bigger and better with at least one new challenge. Entry is £10 per head and all we ask is that you raise as much money as possible. The cost of participating in these activities would normally cost you around £100.

The Great Devon Dangle! Take a leap of faith for the Hospice on Sunday, 14th September and you will have something to boast about, not to mention the adrenaline buzz! This daring event attracts the brave from all over Devon and although it sounds nerve-wracking and delightfully dangerous, the event is supervised by experts, so you're in the safest of hands. Entries for the 180 ft drop fill up fast, as they do for the 80ft drop, so don't let your deliberations dangle for too long!

North Devon Hospice is looking for helpers to call on our supporters once a month to collect their lottery subscriptions.

Celebrating North Devon Day - Saturday, 24th May

Teresa Crossman came up with the wonderful idea of celebrating the history, culture and beauty of this lovely area in which we live at the same time as raising funds for the local Hospice. which would not exist were it not for the generous support it receives from local people.

Whether it's a cream tea, an open garden or BBQ, or another fund raiser, it is hoped that everyone will join in! Could you organise an event? Each event will receive a free North Devon flag, posters and help from the Fundraising Office of the Hospice.

Once again we want to thank so many of you for your invaluable support over the years. As Christmas can be a lonely time of the year when we think about friends and family who are no longer with us, we have found the Light Up a Life Appeal engenders an unforgettable feeling of togetherness and remembrance. For those unsure about the Appeal, every December we encourage people across North Devon to celebrate the honour the lives of loved ones, by lighting candles and having their names written in books of remembrance.

We invite you to join us at one of our special services in memory of someone who has touched your life in a special way. NORTH DEVON HOSPICE

Thank you so much for the support that you have given to the North Devon Hospice over the years. We do rely on local support and thanks to you we are now able to help around 80 local people every day. I have worked for the Hospice for nearly ten years now and have seen some very positive changes as we have grown in how we are able to support local people who need the specialist care of the North Devon Hospice.

We have a team of individuals who give talks and any of them would be delighted to come to any meeting you may have in your village, whether it be WI, Church Group, School or any other, to talk about the work of the Hospice. It really is a wonderful place and something we should all be very proud of. In the words of Stuart, one of our invaluable volunteers, "It is a warm, loving, caring place that gives support and time away from the stresses and strains of living with problems we face." It is not what you expect.

Has another year really gone by since we clicked our knitting needles and indulged in delicious pancakes?

All knitters are invited to join in this fun morning, knitting strips for the Hospice and hopefully raising money for them too. As usual, you will need size 4mm [8] needles and a supply of double knitting wool and be at the Hall ready to start knitting at 10.00. This is a sponsored event and sponsor forms are available at the Shop or Chicane. Last year we raised the magnificent sum of £752 - can we do that again [hard task] or do even better?

Whilst the knitters work, others can come along and enjoy coffee and a pancake. Val, Sally and their helpers will again be slaving in the kitchen and although there is currently no Sunday School, the money they raise will benefit the children of our church.

NORTH DEVON HOSPICE

Light up a Life

Christmas is a special time for remembering loved ones no longer with us. The North Devon Hospice and Children's Hospice South West are jointly organising Light Up a Life that enables you to make a donation and dedicate a light in memory of some you have loved on a special Christmas Tree of Light. Any one can be remembered - they may not have recently passed away, but their loss is still with us. The name of your loved one is then recorded in a book of remembrance. There will be services of remembrance across North Devon: at llfracombe Holy Trinity Church on Sunday, 3rd December at 6.30 p.m. and Combe Martin Methodist Church on Saturday, 9th December at 7.00 p.m.

The Santa Fun Run

Sunday 3rd December, 2.15 p.m. Barnstaple Football Club. It is a 2.3 mile fun run. All participants will be given a Santa suit and will run as santas on a safe route in Barnstaple. If you would like to join in this sponsored event for the Hospice call Emma on [01271] 344248 or if you want to come and see a sight of a lifetime, pop along on the day- it will be like no other fun run!

Great North Devon Knit In

The Hospice will again be holding their Great North Devon Knit In and as in the past few years, we shall be holding the Village's event as part of the Shrove Tuesday Pancake Coffee Morning in the Manor Hall on Tuesday, 20th February, 2007, from 10.00 a.m. to 12.00 noon.

Knitters will need a pair of No. 8 needles and one or two balls of double knitting wool and they and [everyone is welcome to join in] knit for two hours, although breaks are allowed for tea, coffee and a pancake! A sponsored event to raise money for the Hospice, the sponsor forms and posters advertising the event will be available in January from the Shop or Judie, but in the meantime please make a note of the date and keep it free. Last year we hoped to top the £400 we raised in 2004 and we did - raising just over £600. Can we do better this time? Let's try!

The Hospice are fortunate to have a large team of valued volunteers but would like additional help from:

• Volunteers to assist in the in-patient unit during evenings and week-ends
• Volunteers to assist with the sale & distribution of donated items on e-bay

NORTH DEVON HOSPICE GINGERBREAD HOUSE

Details of the gingerbread house appeared in the August issue and Ethel [Tidbury] has been busy knitting ever since!

Knitting from both the given patterns [copies of which are available - call 883544] and her own inspired ideas, butterflies, pots of flowers, dishes of liquorice all-sorts, doughnuts, gingerbread men, iced cakes and other goodies have slipped off her needles. Some of her offerings are shown below.

The gingerbread house [the size of an average room] will be set in a knitted garden with three large knitted trees. From squares [bricks, walls and the lawn] to sweets, there is something for everyone to knit.

Everyone taking part will have their name in the Gingerbread Cookery Book, together with any recipe that includes ginger that you can contribute. So why not start knitting now and help raise money for Great Ormond Street Children's Hospital and the North Devon Hospice.

NORTH DEVON HOSPICE

You may have seen in the Journal that the Hospice are once again calling all Knitters! Following the success of last year's knitted Christmas Tree, a new project is underway. Supported by Atlantic Village and the Big Sheep and to raise money for the Hospice and Great Ormond Street Children's Hospital, a Gingerbread House - another inspiration of Alison Murray - and produced by Nutty Knitters is being constructed.

About the size of an average living room, the plan is to complete it by June 2007. It will then be displayed at Atlantic Village before going to London to raise further funds.

There will be something to knit for everyone, from squares [bricks, walls and garden] to sweets, cakes and cookies in all colours - not just green! There are 'Recipes' for a gingerbread man, Battenburg cake, doughnut, iced bun, leaves and flowers. The exterior will be made up of 10" squares in brown, the interior in 8" squares in pastels and the garden in 10" squares in mid to dark green - all in plain or fancy knitting.

Banish the winter blues, abandon the spring-cleaning, put your best foot forward and spring into life by joining our WALK FOR LIFE!

North Devon has some of the most magnificent coastal and countryside walks and you can explore at first hand a variety of plants and appreciate some of the most outstanding scenery in Europe. There are 10 magical walks to choose from, and whatever your age or fitness levels, there will be a walk to suit YOU.

The walks will be fun, and will have an expert guide from HM Coastguard who will give you anecdotal stories along the way. The walks will also be incredibly meaningful because every mile we walk we will be helping someone who needs the care and support of the local North Devon Hospice. All participants will receive a free 'Walk for Life' t-shirt and you can walk in memory of a loved one or as a tribute to the work of the Hospice, or just for the love of our beautiful North Devon coast and countryside.

Working at the Hospice, it becomes obvious on a daily basis that cancer and other life-threatening illnesses are not selective and can affect people of all ages and from all walks of life. This event is for all the family and your friends - let's make it something big and make a difference for someone else.

Come on, Spring into action - your support will make a rally positive difference to someone in our local community who relies on hospice care.

Walks for Life takes place on Sunday, 26th May, starting at 10.00 a.m. [registration from 9.15 a.m.] and vary in length and difficulty, from 3.5 miles [easy] to 10 miles [difficult].

PANCAKE & COFFEE MORNING

Once again the Shrove Tuesday morning was a great success. As the clock struck ten, 24 knitters were casting on their 20 stitches in wools of every hue, cooks in the kitchen were preparing batter and cutting up lemons, and there were good smells beginning to issue forth.

Whilst the knitters clicked and clacked for the next two hours the Hall was full of people enjoying a coffee and a pancake.

We were delighted that Ali Hunt, from the North Devon Hospice, was able to drop in once again, encouraging us to knit harder, although everyone took a break to enjoy a pancake with her.

At mid-day, platefuls of pancakes had been made and consumed raising a record £160 for the Sunday School. Knitters cast off and although their number was slightly down on last year, over 25 feet of strips - to be turned into blankets - had been knitted. Sue and Jean took the honours for the longest strips but everyone had contributed sponsorship which exceeded last year's amount by £150! A magnificent total of £752 was taken, together with the strips, to the Hospice.

Congratulations to everyone - another very successful morning.

The Hospice's 25 foot knitted Christmas Tree will be on display at Atlantic Village from 14th November to 6th January and everyone who has knitted a leaf will be invited to a thank you get together. Others make sure you go and see it!

All knitters' names will go in a special book and it is hoped that the tree will get an entry in The Guinness Book of Records. Leaves are now needed as soon as possible over at the Hospice so that the 'tree growers' can get to work! If anyone has leaves they would like taken over to Barnstaple, please contact Judie [883544] and she will collect and deliver them for you: Through the Newsletter, leaves have come in from Sharon and Maureen of Wolverhampton and a good 'bundle' from our own Ursula.

The Hospice will again be 'Lighting Up a Life' across North Devon with their meaningful and moving Christmas Appeal. THE NORTH DEVON HOSPICE

The Hospice has three events planned for September and October - Devon Dangle, Voices for Hospices and Horrendous Hair Day.

The Dangle will take place at Hartland Cliffs on the 18th September, when you will be invited to take part in a heart-stopping heroic descent of the cliffs overlooking the stunning coastal views of Hartland.

On the 8th October, Voices for Hospices will be happening across North Devon. If you are a member of a church choir or choral group, would you like to use your voice - or voices - to raise money for your local hospice?

On Friday, 21st October, YOU can support the Hospice by wearing a wild and wacky hair do, wig, hat, colour or rollers, etc., to raise money. A fun event for everyone!

The all green pieces 8-10" wide and 12-15" long may be given to Judie [Chicane] or taken to the Hospice, but please deliver them by the end of October at the latest as the tree will need to be put together for display at the end of November.

NORTH DEVON HOSPICE

During July, the Hospice is holding two special events:

• Sunday, 3rd July Ladies Driving Day, RMB Chivenor. A once-in-a-lifetime chance for ladies to raise money and show their expertise behind the wheel of some challenging forms of transport. You must hold a current driving licence and there is a £10 registration charge.
• Sunday,10th July National Sandcastle Competition, Woolacombe Beach. A chance for companies or groups to show off their sand-sculpting skills. Teams of 6 will have 3 hours to create their masterpieces. Why not take part or go along and join in the fun - dance to the sounds of an energetic samba band and marvel at the sand artwork.

When our Newsletter Editor asked me if I would like to visit the new Bedded Unit at the Hospice with her, I must admit that I had my doubts. Having lost my husband to cancer three years ago, I did not know how I would feel.

But from the moment we entered the building I was overwhelmed with the sense of calm and the great care that had been taken to anticipate every need of the patients and their families.

From the individual balconies with stunning views in all directions to the walk-in bath, everything has been planned to the last detail. JG

Following the success of their Knit-ins, the Hospice is again appealing to knitters:

"From Sleeves to Leaves"
The World's Largest Knitted Christmas Tree!

Yes, that's right, they are planning to knit a 25 ft Christmas Tree and the knitting instructions are:

Using only green wool [of any shade] knit a piece 8" to 10" wide and between 12" and 15" long. The exact size will depend on the weight of wool and the size of needles used. Be as inventive as you like - stripes, Arans, rib, garter or stocking stitch - whatever stitch you like, or even a combination of stitches].

The target is 2000 pieces and the tree, when complete, will be on display, hopefully from mid-November at Atlantic Village, Bideford.

Once you have knitted your 'leaf' or 'leaves', they need to be sent or taken to the Hospice for wiring and fixing to the tree.

Leaves need to be accompanied by a form giving your name and address, plus a minimum £2 donation [to go to the Hospice]. These details will be included in the Master World's Largest Knitted Christmas Tree Book. It is also hoped to enter it, and all the names, in the Guinness Book of Records.

The forms may be obtained from Judie at Chicane, who will also collect them and the leaves for passing on to the Hospice.

THE PANCAKE KNIT-IN

Shrove Tuesday once again saw the Manor Hall buzzing with activity. By 10 o'clock, Sally and her helpers were up to their elbows in batter and lovely smells were issuing from the kitchen. At the same time, some 27 knitters were casting on their 20 stitches with wool of every colour and the Spinners were treadling and peddling their wares.

For the next couple of hours, the hall remained full - with folks indulging in pancakes and coffee and the children from the Pre-School and Primary School joining in, with pancake races outside.

Pancake makers and knitters alike were encouraged by Ali Hunt from the North Devon Hospice who dropped in for a chat and pancake.

At mid-day, over 100 pancakes had been made and eaten, raising a profit of £150 for the Sunday School; knitters downed tools and cast off and 27 feet 8 inches of brightly coloured strips [to make blankets] had been knitted, with the honour of producing the longest strip, 231/2inches, going to Hilary Stevens; and the North Devon Hospice had benefited by a magnificent £603.50 from the sponsorship. Well done, everybody - another most successful morning.

Three of us took the money to the Hospice and were given a guided tour of the nearly completed and very impressive new bedded unit. Ali has promised to let us know when it is complete and when visitors will be welcome. It certainly is worth a visit and will be of great comfort and benefit to cancer sufferers and their families.

Stitch and Bitch * Clatter and Natter * Draw and Jaw * Click and Cluck. Following on from everyone expressing how much they enjoyed sitting and knitting together, arrangements have been made and a small group has been meeting over the last few weeks, with three people learning to make lace. There has been stitching, drawing, clattering and clicking, but concentration has been too intense for much nattering, jawing, clucking and certainly no bitching!!

Why not come and join us? We won't be getting together over Easter, so will meet again on Monday, 11th April. See you there?

• Sunday, 5th June: Classic Cars at West Buckland School. Over 100 sports and classic cars, after 70 mile run across North Devon, will be on display in the afternoon for everyone to ogle over. Plus other sideshows, etc.

NORTH DEVON HOSPICE

The North Devon Hospice are organising two sponsored events to raise funds for the local Hospice.

The first, the 'Devon Dangle' - not for the feint-hearted - is on Sunday, 19th September, when you can take up the gauntlet to abseil either 80 or 180 feet of breath-taking cliffs near Hartland, in the safe hands of professionals. The second is less daring! A sponsored walk, cycle or horse ride on Exmoor on Sunday, 26th September, organised by Ivan Huxtable. The 21-mile walk starts at Simonsbath at 8.15 a.m., the 25-mile cycle starts at Simonsbath at 10.30 a.m. and the horse riders will start their 10-mile ride at 11.30 a.m. from Brendon Two Gates. PANCAKE KNIT-IN

Shrove Tuesday saw the Manor Hall a veritable hive of activity! The spinners were spinning, the W.I. selling cakes and other goodies, Sally and her helpers producing a never-ending supply of pancakes and coffee and twenty-two ladies, some from the W.l. and spinners, clicking away with their knitting needles, with enough different coloured wool to produce a technicolour dreamcoat! Even the children from the Primary School entered into the spirit of the morning, tossing pancakes in a race around the playground.

Thanks to all who participated and everyone who came to enjoy a pancake, the morning was a huge success. The cakes sold well; it was the best ever pancake morning and the knitters produced 33 feet 5 inches of strips [for blankets] and £430.60 for the North Devon Hospice.

THE GREAT NORTH DEVON KNIT IN

This is a sponsored event for the North Devon Hospice taking part all over North Devon in halls, homes, pubs and even shop windows.

It is easy to join in. Anyone can get sponsored to knit strips of wool for a maximum of two hours. The strips are then sent to the Hospice where they are sewn into blankets to be distributed both locally and abroad, wherever there is a need.

Berry will be 'Knitting In' on Tuesday, 24th February, from 10.00 a.m. to 12.00 noon, at the Manor Hall in conjunction with the Sunday School Pancake and Coffee Morning - it being Shrove Tuesday. The North Devon Spinners have kindly agreed to share the Hall for the morning, so they will be working away too! A veritable hive of community activity!

Knitters are required to use size 8 [4mm] needles and double knitting wool, working in garter stitch on 20 stitches to the row. Everyone is welcome to join in and sponsor forms are available either from Chicane [883544] or the Post Office. If anyone has any unused and unwanted double knitting wool they could donate, that would be appreciated.

If you are neither a knitter nor a spinner, then do please come along for a cup of coffee and a scrumptious pancake - join in the fun and support the event.

DREAMWALK

In August 2003, the skies above North Devon will light up as the Castle Hill Estate becomes the stage for Dreamwalk. 100,000 dazzling lanterns and torches will light the way for our audience as they embark on an illuminated walk of discovery. Hundreds of performers, a medieval battle re-enactment, a spectacular fire and water finale and some amazing scenery will make this one of the most spectacular events ever staged in the South West.

Lightquest events are designed to bring an open-minded audience out into the countryside at dusk and into the night. Dreamwalk gives a choice of two illuminated circular trails - the Discovery Route for the family and the Explorers Route for the keen walker [both take around 3 hours to complete]. The walks are outdoors and partly cross-country, so please wear sensible footwear, practical clothing and bring a torch. The grounds of Fortescue Estate at Castle Hill are not normally open to the public and this is a unique opportunity to see the grounds as they have never been seen before.

Every 3 years, Hospices throughout the world perform a musical event on the same day at the same local time, in order to raise funds, awareness and support for their work. On Saturday 4th October, for Voices for Hospice 2003, the North Devon Hospice plan a performance of Handel's Messiah at the Church of St. Peter and Mary Magdalene, Barnstaple, at 7.30 p.m. Supported by the Royal School of Church Music in Devon, Mr. Andrew Millington, Director of Music at Exeter Cathedral, will be the Conductor and Musical Director, Mr. Shaun Tucker of Wimborne Minster will play the organ and soloists will visit from the Royal Academy of Music in London.

We invite you to pay to sing this well loved classic and are seeking as many choirs and individuals from across North Devon to participate in the chorus on a 'pay to sing' basis at £5 per person [a light supper is included]. If singing isn't your forte, be part of the audience and tickets are available now for £5 each. All proceeds to be donated to the North Devon Hospice Light in The Dark Appeal.

CENTENARY TEA

Please note that there is a change of venue for the Special Birthday Tea to celebrate the 100th Birthday of the Queen Mother on Friday, 4th August.

It will now take place in the Baptist Church Hall [Combe Martin], from 3.00 to 5.00 p.m. At 4.00 p.m. we shall be joining with many others in North Devon in a toast to the Queen Mother.

There will be a prize for the 'lucky' ticket and a cake stall provided by Kentisbury W.I. Tickets, £3.00, available from Committee Members.

The next major event will be the Annual Autumn Fayre in the Community Centre, Combe Martin, on Saturday, 21st October, starting with a Ploughman's Lunch at 12.00 noon. Everyone welcome!
